Hand Over the Keys: 7 Ways You Can Lose Your Driver’s License in South Carolina

While it might not seem like a big deal, having a driver’s license is a privilege which we oftentimes take for granted, and getting it revoked or suspended can seriously impact your life. Instead of having the freedom to go where you want when you want, your day to day routine is seriously impacted while you rely on others for your transportation.
There are certain offenses which will deem you unfit for a license in any state, but South Carolina also has a few stipulations that you might not be aware of. Let’s take a look at seven of the “key” ways you can lose your license in the Palmetto state.

  • Not paying your traffic tickets – South Carolina takes ticketing seriously. When you are issued a ticket, there is a due date for your fine. By paying your ticket, you are stating you are guilty of committing the traffic offense. If this fine isn’t paid on time, it will result in the suspension of your license.
  • Driving without insuranceOperating a moving vehicle is often likened to a dangerous weapon, so in order to protect yourself and those around you, you are required to have vehicle insurance. If you get pulled over and are not currently insured, you will incur fines, reinstatement fees, and the loss of your license.
  • Driving under the influence – Every state imposes harsh penalties for driving under the influence, so South Carolina isn’t an outlier here. When convicted of a DUI, you could face a minimum of 6 months without your license. The more violations you receive, the longer the suspension time will be, and you could even permanently lose your right to drive following repeated egregious offenses. Keep in mind this also extends to operating vehicles under the influence besides just cars, such as boats.
  • Too many traffic pointsIf you frequently get tickets, yet pay them all on time, you still might be in danger of getting your license taken away. In South Carolina, you accumulate points for each violation, and once you hit 12 points, your license will be revoked. Over time the points will be reduced and fall off, but it’s a good idea to keep an eye on how many you have.
  • Failure to pay child supportChild support can be an incredibly controversial issue, but all 50 states place such an emphasis on it, that your license will be revoked if you fail to make your payments. In South Carolina, however, there is an exception for a temporary license if the suspension would result in extreme hardship.
  • Driving with a suspended licenseOnce your license has been suspended, you are not allowed to drive for any reason. If you are caught driving without a license, you will face yet another suspension, which could possibly be just as long as your original suspension.
  • DisqualificationMany people don’t realize that your license can be revoked if you are determined unfit to be operating a vehicle. At any time, the South Carolina DMV can require you to be re-examined. Any physical or psychological findings could be grounds for a permanent license revocation.
