What do you do if the FBI shows up and starts asking you questions? That’s a really big factor. Usually, when the FBI or any law enforcement officer shows up and starts asking you questions, many times they do that without telling you; they show up and surprise you. Another term for that is called a “knock and talk.”
If the police show up, or the FBI show up and they want to talk to you, first of all, you need to realize that you don’t have to talk to them. Most people want to talk – most people are curious as to what they’re asking questions about. You may simply be a witness to something, it may be something that you don’t know anything about. But you need to understand that, many times, that’s the way investigations are done, because the government doesn’t have enough information to get a search warrant or the government doesn’t have enough information to get an arrest warrant, or they’re not ready to get an arrest warrant yet. And so, they just show up and they just want to get statements from you.
You need to know this: whatever you tell them can be repeated in court and so it’s very important to be aware of that and you may want to consult a lawyer before talking to the FBI.
